Bustles are great for the reception. It's not only functional, but very stylish too! Depending on your dress, you may choose to do an over bustle (aka American bustle) or an under bustle (aka French bustle). Both are relatively easy to do it yourself, but the over bustle would be easier.

.UNDER BUSTLE.
For my dress, I chose to go with an under bustle. I did a two-tier under bustle, using 8 points. The first layer was attached with 3 points and the bottom layer was attached with 5 points.

To acheive this look, I put my dress on a dress form that was adjusted to my height (accounting for my wedding day heels). I used straight pins at first to pin the bustle and adjusted until I was satisfied. Then I used sewing chalk to mark the pinned points.

To attach the bustle, you can use ribbons, hooks or buttons. With ribbons, you just sew ribbons on all the points and tie to bustle. Instead of ribbons, you can attach hooks on top and eyes on the bottom. For my dress, I used buttons and loops.

.OVER BUSTLE.
For my friend's dress, we decided to go with an over bustle to show off the beautiful bead work on her train. The over bustle also complimented her mermaid-shaped dress very well. I sewed a white hook on her train and created an "eye" with white thread. I ran out of batteries so I didn't get a chance to take a pic of the hook and thread. You wouldn't notice the hook and "eye" though unless you looked for it. This was really quick to do because it was only one point.
